How to Build a Career as an Electronic Music Producer: 5 Essential Tips

Starting a career in music production is exciting but challenging. Here are five essential tips to help you gain traction in the industry:

1. Establish an Online Presence

Social media platforms and streaming sites are essential for reaching new listeners. Regularly posting your music, engaging with your audience, and networking with other producers help build your brand and make connections that matter.

Can you build a successful career in music without an online presence? Yes, I believe you can, but I might take more work. If you’re old school and don’t want to be on social media, I’ll write another post on ways to work without it soon.

2. Define Your Style

Your unique sound is what sets you apart. Spend time exploring different styles and influences until you find the sound that feels authentic to you. A strong, recognisable style will make you memorable and help you stand out in a crowded market.

Re-use sounds. There are some sounds that I use in every track. I also often resample sounds, which constantly improves and updates my sample library. This helps to build a signature sound that people will recognise as being your identity. Check this blog post on building a signature sound library.

3. Network with Other Artists

Networking isn’t just about who you know; it’s about building mutually supportive relationships. Collaborate on projects, remix other artists’ tracks, and attend industry events. These connections can lead to new opportunities and help you grow your reputation.

I’ve learnt so much from sitting in the studio with other producers. In fact I’d say this is the best thing for speeding up your learning curve. Collaborating online is good as well, but nothing beats sitting next to someone in the studio.

4. Diversify Your Income

Relying on streaming alone isn’t sustainable for most producers. Explore other ways to monetise, such as selling sample packs (we are always looking to work with other artists so get in touch if you’re interested in working together!), offering mixing or mastering services, and teaching production skills.

Diversifying your income streams will give you more financial stability and flexibility and take the pressure off, giving you more freedom to the thing that matters most, the music.

5. Stay Committed and Set Goals

Success in music doesn’t happen overnight. Set short- and long-term goals for your career and celebrate small victories along the way. Staying committed to regular practice, improvement and growth will help you build a sustainable and fulfilling career in the long run.

I’ve invested in music production lessons, sample packs, studio equipment and software over the years. Anything that will help me to become a better producer and artist is worthwhile. Check out my sample pack Drum and Bass Essentials Vol 1 which is the culmination of years of experience as a producer.
